Background... My older brother and I were born in Los Angeles in the early eighties. Our Papa is an Italian immigrant, born and raised in Rome - our mom was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, the first U.S. born generation of her family, from Scottish immigrants.
Our family lived in London and Rome for most of our upbringing with shorter prior stints in New York and Ontario.
I really began getting into painting and illustration when I started spending my lunch breaks in the art attic of our London school - it seemed like a much better use of my time and a great way of avoiding the lunch time bullies.
I found myself getting lost in creating abstract worlds while exploring shading techniques I learned in art class. It was a new feeling to be able to create something that didn't require an explanation. It could be whatever I wanted it to be - it wasn't an art project dictated by my teacher I had no interest in doing... it was something that came out of me -
We moved to Los Angeles in the late nineties where I finished up high school and went to a small liberal arts university double majoring in Fine Arts and Sociology. Throughout my international culture shock transition to the states, I was fortunate enough to have had a few great art teachers who understood what I was going through and gave me the space and materials I needed to develop at my own pace in my own independent study.
Out into the real world after college I worked in Hollywood on feature films in the Art Department. I was also working backstage for Broadway touring shows when they came through Southern California, and designing costumes for my alma matter's main stage theatrical productions.
Looking for a change of scenery I took a job in San Francisco in the print catalog industry, working logistics of photo shoots for a major high-end furniture catalog retailer. While working there I was also designing costumes and doing graphic design work for San Francisco theatre companies in the evenings as well as live painting at music festivals and nightclubs on the weekends. The recession hit, things got bad, and with a series of promising graphic design, illustration and painting opportunities unfolding, I went freelance -
I've been living and working in West Oakland, California as an independent artist and designer since 2010 - Live painting at music festivals and concert venues, designing fliers for nightclubs and theatres, designing car graphics, designing and building parade floats, illustrating books, art directing, hosting solo and group art gallery showings, selling prints, merchandise and original paintings at art markets.
I find myself doing side work along the way that teaches me new perspectives, gives me a glimpse into other industries, and supplies inspiration and human connection outside my studio.
My current focus is painting on canvas - creating original abstract and surreal works for personal growth - and creating commissioned paintings for businesses and private collectors.
